Revisiting the Silence
Event on 2011-03-03 00:00:00
There have always been totem poles on the Northwest Coast. And there has always been a tradition of travelling to see the poles. In 1966, New York artist Adelaide de Menil began her journey to see the totem poles on the Northwest Coast. She travelled with her camera. Revisiting the Silence considers the black and white photos of Adelaide de Menil, who was accompanied by Bill Reid on several trips along the Northwest Coast from 1966 to 1968. The book that emerged from their collaboration, Out of the Silence, now out of print, featured photos taken by de Menil during these trips, and text by Bill Reid. Guest curator Peter Morin has created an exhibition of selected images from de Menil’s photographic archive. Revisiting the Silence invites us to travel to the original locations of the totem poles. The images address the dilemma of collecting poles, and for some, the parallel dilemma of allowing the poles to go back to the earth.
Come to the Bill Reid Gallery to experience these thought-provoking images and reflect on their cultural implications.

Dall Sheep are a fixture in Southcentral Alaska… you can see them while you’re driving on the Girdwood Highway to the resort, ski town of Girdwood, about a 35-minute drive from Anchorage. They are clinging to the steep cliffs year round along the road… big tourist attraction in the Summer.
Quiviut Shop

The Quiviut Shop in downtown Anchorage is an old tourist attraction that is now dwarfed by the city’s "skyscrapers". It sits on the corner of 6th and H Street.
This shop sells Oomingmak products, or woven Musk Ox fur, spun and woven by Native Alaskans. The wool of the Musk Ox is much softer than either sheep or llama wool, and allegedly much warmer.

That information usually comes from state governments not the federal government. Go to the State of Alaska web site and request info. They will send it to you.
